Sailing around Bornholm – report by Peter Wakeling
Peter gave an account of a cruise aboard
the CSSA Najad 380 ‘Freya
’ in the Baltic. He flew to Denmark then drove to Sweden across the Copenhagen-Malmo bridge (as in the recent TV series ‘The Killing’) to join the boat at the marina in Ystad (location of the Kurt Wallander detective series). They sailed to the Danish Island of Bornholm, to the port of Allinge at the north tip of the island. Bornholm has 19 harbours with one marina. The harbours are unique, being blasted out of the granite rocks. In late August there were just three boats there, as the schools were back after the summer holidays.
They then sailed all round the coast of Bornholm, stopping at various harbours including the capital Ronne. Most seemed to concentrate on producing smoked fish. Leaving the main island, they sailed to the small island of Christianso
, the largest of three small islands about 10nM NE of Bornholm. The whole island was fortified about 500 years ago and has changed little.
From here they sailed back to Sweden, finishing again at Ystad.
Peter had a day to spare and went to the tourist office from where he joined a walk around the ‘Wallander Trail’ including three police stations used in the different TV series.
