Trip on White Ibis starting 2017-06-01
We were held up in Sint Maarten
getting a new radar, and left just in time to get above 35 degrees north in time to keep our insurers happy. After some heavy weather, we needed to put into Bermuda
for a repair on the jib, which we had hand sewn in place during a calm spell. The island was buzzing with America's cup fever. Crossing the gulf stream, Jade noticed the change in waves and the GPS confirmed the presence of a substantial cross current
We carried into Newport Rhode Island
, then New Bedford
/Fairhaven which is much cheaper and really interesting. It's where Herman Melville shipped on his whaling voyage and also where Slocum built the Spray. We have been here almost a month
, waiting on a heat exchanger repair but should leave tomorrow to join an Ocean Cruising Club rally. We've met wonderful people, so have not lacked for good company or help in sorting the little challenges of life such as connecting to unfamiliar gas and electric fittings.
Big hello to everyone back home.
