As Naomi reported at the August meeting, after a successful operation last month Sue Fowle has just returned home. She is making good progress and beginning to walk steadily. Sue would welcome members getting in touch, email soo.fowle@virgin’net. Sue intends to sail with Gordon and Chris on November 17th.

Future Trips

1.1After last year’s successful training weekends Alan Howells will skipper another sail training trip on the weekend of October 11 – 12, from Plymouth. As the final payment to Liberty Yachts is due by September 1st, will those who have paid a first payment of £50 now pay a final £40, and those who failed to pay the £50 asked for in the July newsletter please now pay the full £90.

1.2Jeff Birkin’s power training trip, planned for September 19 – 21 has unfortunately been cancelled. As well as problems with the Solent-based boat we had hoped to use, some prospective crew dropped out so that no alternative was viable.

1.3Phil Steele will skipper a weekend sail on the PYC yacht ‘Quartette’ on November 8 – 9. This is fully booked, no advance payment is required.

1.4Gordon Ogden and Chris Watts will skipper both PYC yachts ‘Spellbinder’ and ‘Quartette’ for a midweek sail on Monday November 17th – Wednesday 19th. This is now fully booked, no advance payment is required.

1.5Phil will skipper his traditional Christmas sail on the weekend of December 20 – 21. This may be on a PYC yacht or, with Bob Buchanan and Becky Goddard, on ‘Lady Emma’. Depending on the yacht used there may be a place still available.

News and Notices

BSA Treasurer After many years of sterling service Jane Jenkyn has decided to retire as Treasurer at the AGM in October. We will be looking for someone to take on this committee post. It is not be very time-consuming; it requires keeping an ongoing account of income and expenditure, a record of members’ payments for trips, and preparing an annual account for the AGM. It does not include charter bookings and payments which are dealt with by the secretary. Will anyone who would be willing to undertake this please let us know – and perhaps all members could try to persuade someone they think would fit the bill to be nominated!

2.2Free books available. As advertised last month, Peter Ashdown is moving house and is offering free sailing books to members. Some of the books have been taken. Jock has the remainder as listed below, and will bring any which you ask for to our meeting, so please contact Jock if you would like any on this list. Jock will also bring a selection to each meeting to see if any are wanted; if not, they will be added to our library on board Sabrina.

I would point out that there is a complete Day Skipper course set available, which would be of value to any member thinking of progressing to RYA Day Skipper level.

At the August meeting there were reports from Gordon Ogden on sailing with Ros Bennet on a leg of her Cornish Crabber Challenge, from Bob Buchanan on a week’s sailing on ‘Lady Emma’ (notable for the fuel story), and from Becky Goddard on a charter in Corfu.

Here are these reports:
