Future Trips

1.1The 2-boat charter from Plymouth Sailing School for the weekend of September 29th – October 1st is fully booked and all payments received. One crew has dropped out due to injury, which adds £4.80 to the cost per person. Alan Howells will recover this from all 11 crew during the trip and refund BSA.

1.2Alan Howells’ proposed autumn charter in NW Spain has become a December charter in Tenerife, and a Lagoon 380 catamaran has now been chartered from Santa Cruz. This will be on December 2nd – 9th. In order to secure the boat Ian Collins has made the booking at a cost of £2315 (deposit of £695 paid by Ian). It is fully booked, and will those going please contact Ian for payment details. The balance payments of about £270 will be due mid-September.

1.3Some members had asked Gordon Ogden for a boat-handling midweek trip and this will be on a Plymouth Sailing school Bavaria 34 from the evening of Sunday 22nd October until the afternoon of Thursday 26th.

1.4In response to a request for a midweek winter warmer, Chris Watts has said he could be available to skipper on December 4th – 7th. Chris will confirm at the November meeting. This could be on a PYC yacht if the proposed Associate Memberships are in place, otherwise on a Solent-based charter.

2.News and Notices

2.1PYC Associate Membership. As discussed at the August meeting, our skippers who have been authorised to skipper PYC yachts and those members who have crewed most often with them have been advised of the requirement, following PYC’s annual inspection as a RYA Training Centre, for all who sail on their yachts to be individual Associate Members. Three of the skippers are prepared to take this up as long as sufficient of our members also join, at an annual membership fee of £40. For those who regularly sail on two 3-day midweek trips each year this would effectively raise the daily sailing fee to about £31, which compares favourably with a commercial charter cost without the need to have full crew of six. So far we have replies from just six of our members. Will all those who were emailed about this on August 3rd please reply to Jock; we need to have decision at the AGM on October 9th.

2.2Christmas Dinner. Yes. It’s already time to think about this!. Last year Gordon Ogden arranged what was probably our best Christmas dinner event for some years, at the Bordeaux Quay restaurant on Bristol Harbourside. Gordon has offered to arrange this again, at Bordeaux Quay, and a provisional booking for Tuesday December 19th has been made. Gordon needs to know how many of you would attend, so please let him know. At the time of writing this we don’t yet have the menu, but Gordon hopes to update us at the meeting on September 11th.

3.Recent Trips

At the August meeting we several reports, including two from Peter Wakeling on sailing in the Stockholm Archipelago and in NW Spain, and we also received the latest account of ‘Aremiti’s voyage through the Dodecanese. To avoid an overlarge newsletter these three ‘foreign’ reports have already been sent to members. The other reports given at the meeting follow below. These are from Sonia Russé and Ewart Hutton on the two-boat charter from Hamble Point on July10 – 14, by Alan Howells on a North Brittany trip in July, by Ian Collins on a weekend from Plymouth early in August, and by Bob Buchanan on a Solent charter in August.

A reminder from Chris Wallace to please send photos of crews, destinations and boats on BSA trips for adding to the website gallery to webmaster@bristolsailing.org.uk
