Future Trips

Bank Holiday weekend April 28 – May 2. (Thanks to the royal wedding, Friday 29 April is now a public holiday, and Monday May 2 is the late spring Bank Holiday.)

Bill Thomas will skipper a trip from Falmouth (note change of location – no boats were available from Plymouth), boarding on the afternoon of Friday 29th, returning on the evening of Monday May 2. This is fully booked. A deposit of £50 is now needed – please send cheques, payable to Bristol Sailing Association, to the secretary, Jock Playle, 3 Iddesleigh Road, Bristol, BS6 6YL, or pay at the meeting on March 14th.

Jeff Birkin will skipper a cross-Channel trip from the Solent, Thursday evening April 28 to Monday May 2. There are two places available. Please phone (0117 973 8855) or email (jockplayle3@waitrose.com) me if you would like to take one of these places. A £50 deposit is now due, Cheques to Jock (address in a) above) or pay at the March 14 meeting. The total cost will be from £170 - £195 per person.

Jeff Birkin will skipper a Solent weekend sail on May 20 – 22. There are two places available on this. Contact me (Jock, details in 1.1 b above) if you would like to take one of these.

Bill Thomas will skipper a weekend trip from Plymouth on June 3 – 5. There are one or two places available for this – again contact Jock to take it. A boat has been booked for this, so a £50 deposit is due, payment details as in 1.1a) above.

Helford – l’Aber Wrac’h race, June 22 – 29. We will charter a boat from Falmouth for this. The race starts on Friday June 24, with post-race meal etc. on the Saturday evening. The charter will be from Wednesday 23, returning to Falmouth on the 30th, allowing 3 days for a short cruise in Brittany and the return Channel crossing. Alan Howells will skipper. There is one place still available for this.

PASAB (Penzance, around Scillies, and back) races, July 29 – August 1. This is already fully booked, with Bill Thomas as skipper. We expect to charter from Falmouth, which means picking up the boat on the evening of Wednesday 27th June and sailing to Penzance on the Thursday, for the start of the race to St Mary’s on Friday morning. Saturday is a race around the Islands, with Sunday a free day for cruising. The return race to Penzance is on the Monday, with the return sail to Falmouth on Tuesday. Bill is only available for the weekend of the races, and Jeff Birkin will skipper the two Falmouth – Penzance legs, for which we have another two crew members available.

2011 Med charter. This is now confirmed as a charter from Kremik in Croatia, to be skippered by Phil Steele, on June 11-18, and is now fully booked. Bob Hayes has booked the boat from Sunsail and made the flight bookings. All deposits and travel costs have now been paid. Sunsail no longer accept payments by cheque, requiring payment by card. To ensure that BSA is involved in paying the balance (to validate our indemnity insurance) a rather convoluted scheme will be used. Those going should send a cheque to me (as Jane is away) for £254.64 payable to Bristol Sailing Association. BSA will then pay me the total, and I will pay Sunsail by debit card.

Two other future trips were proposed; please let us know if you are interested.

A weekend at a date in July or August – we need a skipper and three more crew for this.

A cruise to the Scilly Isles in September, skippered by Jeff Birkin. We need four more crew for this to be viable.

Announcements

A reminder that Gordon announced at the AGM last October that he will be standing down as Commodore at this year’s AGM on October 10th. Nominations for Commodore should be sent to the Secretary by the proposer, with the name of the seconder and the agreement of the nominee to stand.

3.Recent Trips

A summary of all trips reported at meetings is given here, or a full report, if available. Members reporting at a meeting are reminded that a full version of the report should be provided, either written or emailed. If this isn’t available, then only a short summary will be given in the newsletter. Full reports will be included in the next newsletter following receipt.

At the February meeting we had just one report – a non-sailing report as it turned out – from Phil Steele, on what should have been a Solent weekend trip on a Phoenix boat. The report, which follows, speaks for itself.

Trip on Firebird, skippered by Phil Steele

….and finally some photos, taken by Xavier Uldry on his last BSA trip before returning to Canada, of a boisterous sail out of Plymouth to the Eddystone.
