Future Trips

Gordon Ogden will skipper a midweek trip on the PYC yacht Spellbinder on Monday March 18th to Wednesday 20th. This is fully booked.

Overlapping with the above trip, Phil Steele will skipper a midweek trip on the other PYC yacht Quartette on Wednesday March 20th – Friday 22nd. This is now also fully booked.

For both the above trips no advance payment is needed. They will cost £20 per day, payable at the time of sailing.

Jeff Birkin would like to skipper a cruise from Milford Haven to southern Ireland early in June. This could be either a 7-day (Friday May 31 - Friday June 7) or 5-day (Sunday June 2 – Friday 7) trip. So far five people are interested, so another 1 or 2 needed. Depending on numbers and boat availability, the cost would be about £110 – 150 for the 5-day trip, and £150 – 200 for the 7-day.

1.4As in previous years, Alan Howells proposes skippering a trip from Plymouth to Tréguier and adjacent north Brittany ports over the early May Bank Holiday weekend. This would probably be a long weekend, from Thursday evening to Tuesday (May 2nd – 7th). We need another three crew for this to go ahead – please let us know if you are interested.

1.5Jeff Birkin would also like to skipper a boat in this year’s PASAB (Penzance around Scilly and back) race weekend on July 26 - 29. The details are:

Race briefing at 18:30 on Friday, 26 July 2013 at the Penzance Sailing Club clubhouse.

Saturday is a free day for cruising in the Scilly Isles at leisure.

Availability of a boat from Plymouth or Falmouth for racing is uncertain at present. If one is available from Plymouth Jeff has said he would sail from Plymouth with a small delivery crew on the Wednesday or Thursday, and back on the following Tuesday, with the full crew needed from Friday to Monday. Three or four members have expressed interest; anyone else interested please let us know.

1.6Alan Howells would again like to skipper a boat in the Helford – l’Aber Wrac’h race, which will probably be on Friday June 28th. A week’s charter from Plymouth on Wednesday June 26th – Wednesday July 3rd would be needed, with two days’ cruising north Brittany after the race. We have three interested at present, so another 2 -3 experienced crew needed.

1.7We would like some dates and skipper availability for weekend charters please.

2.News and notices

2.1First Aid

A number of us took the RYA one-day First Aid course on board Sabrina on Sunday May 2nd 2010. As this is valid for 3 years, the certificates expire in two months time. Will those who want to renew their certificate, or obtain one for the first time, (necessary for validity of a Yachtmaster certificate) please let me know. I will see if we can repeat the previous arrangement, with the instructor (Brian Howell) taking the course on board Sabrina. In 2010 it cost £25 (compared to the usual commercial rate of £75) and was 10.00 am – 4.45 pm on a Sunday.

Will those interested please let me (Jock) know, and give available dates in May.

2.2Wilderness Lecture

Each year one of the Wilderness Lecture series in Bristol has some maritime content. This year on Wednesday March 6th Tristan Gooley (now the only living person to have both sailed and flown solo across the Atlantic) will talk on “The wonderful world of Natural Navigation”. (See his website www.naturalnavigator.com )

This will be in the Chemistry Lecture Theatre at the University of Bristol, Woodland Road, Bristol at 7.30 pm. Tickets are £7.50 at the door (early arrival is recommended) or £7 in advance (until March 4th) from Stanfords bookshop, 29 Corn Street, Bristol.

3.Recent Trips

At the February meeting we had reports from Phil Steele (‘Xmas Lights’ trip from Plymouth in December), Don Hirst (‘January Sales’ Solent trip, skippered by Phil), and Bob Buchanan (a sail on Lady Emma in February). Here are these reports:
