We welcome new member Mike Crowley. Mike, a friend of Nick Kinsley, has sailed occasionally over the last 5 years and taken the Coastal Skipper shorebased and practical courses.

As most of the club officers and committee were away (some literally at the other side of the world) the January meeting was an informal one without the usual business agenda. The secretary took the opportunity to demonstrate dummy examples of the new types of flares now on the market, and compare them with the former types now withdrawn from manufacture. The old Pains Wessex, with the “twist and strike” firing action will still be found on charter yachts for a year or two, but will be replaced by either Hansson or new-type Pains Wessex which both have a “pull the ring at the end of the string” mechanism. The only exceptions are the Hansson parachute rocket which has a metal trigger at the bottom of the flare, like the old Pains Wessex type, and all the buoyant smoke cans which have a ring pull at the top. The dummy flares were made available by the RNLI; both Jock and Pete Ashdown are RNLI-trained to give flare demonstrations, and we hope to have a live flare-firing demo in due course, subject to availability of flares from the RNLI.

Future Trips

1.1Jeff Birkin, Dave Lloyd and Bryan Thomas will skipper a three boat Solent charter on the weekend of February 22 – 24. This will be from Haslar marina, Gosport, and will cost £98 per person including fuel and gas. This is a rather higher cost than expected, as two of the boats will be brand new (this month) Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 36i’s. To keep the cost as low as possible we obtained a much better discount than usual. We have paid the full charter fees, so will all those who have booked please send cheques for the full £98 to me (Jock Playle, 3 Iddesleigh Road, Bristol, BS6 6YL) and not to the Treasurer as she has only just returned from Australia. There may be one place still available – please contact me if you would like to go.

1.2Gordon Ogden will skipper a midweek Solent trip on the PYC boat “Spellbinder” on Monday February 25th – 27th. Note that this has reverted to the original date, and not a week later as given in the last newsletter. This is now fully booked. As always with PYC sailing, no deposit is required as the skipper will collect the fees of £51 (£17 per day) at the time of sailing.

1.32008 sailing. The committee and skippers will be meeting in February to put together proposals for sailing during the year. It would be helpful if any members who would like any particular charter (date, place and length) would let me, or any skipper, know.

2.Announcements

2.1February meeting. The meeting on Monday 11th February will be our social evening with jazz band and buffet, when all the officers will be present and able to mingle with everyone, unlike our usual monthly meetings. To help defray the cost of the band and food, there will be a charge of £3 per head which will also give entry to a free raffle. Members’ families are welcome at this event.

2.2Provisioning the boat. Following a recent 3-day midweek sail, Don Hirst has compiled a basic provisioning list which future crews may find useful. It assumes all evening meals were taken ashore, as is usual for Solent sailing.
