Marion Brown
Last week we heard the sad news of the death of Marion Brown. Marion was one of the first members of the Association twenty years ago, and was our Social Secretary for many years. Her health had deteriorated in recent years and she never recovered from a major operation a few months ago.
Although we heard of Marion’s death only on the afternoon of the day before her funeral, I am pleased to say that most of the committee and six other members were able to attend. In his address Marion’s brother Peter referred to her sailing activities which had been curtailed in recent years by declining health. Senior staff members of Bristol Royal Infirmary paid tribute to Marion’s dedication, caring for others, and her love of life and unfailing sense of humour, attributes which those who sailed with her will remember with affection.
Future Trips
1.1PASAB (Penzance, around Scillies, and back) races, July 29 – August 1. This is fully booked, with Bill Thomas as skipper. We will charter from Falmouth, which means picking up the boat on the evening of Wednesday 27th July and sailing to Penzance on the Thursday, for the start of the Islands on Sunday. The return race to Penzance is on the Monday, with the return sail to Falmouth on Tuesday.
Alan Howells has said he would skipper a week’s trip on the GK29 ‘Gundulph’ from Plymouth in August, probably cross-Channel to Tréguier. This would be a fairly demanding trip on a smaller (but very seaworthy and sea-kindly) yacht. At present we have one or two interested but not enough to go ahead. Will anyone else who would like to do this please contact Alan as soon as possible (tel. 0117 944 2618).
Alan will probably also skipper this boat more locally to Plymouth in September. This is the boat we have used, with Alan as skipper, for training boat- and sail-handling in the past two years. Please let us know if you are interested – we had several members who missed out on the previous training trips and said they would be interested in further ones.
1.3Gordon Ogden will skipper a midweek trip in September, from Monday 19th to either Wednesday 21st or Friday 23rd. There are one or two places still available.
1.4Malcolm Price will skipper a weekend from Plymouth on September 9 – 11. This is fully booked and an Elan 384 has been booked from Liberty at Plymouth. Will those going who have not yet paid a deposit of £50 please send it now to the Treasurer, Mrs J R Jenkyn, Edgecliff, 12 Marine Parade, Clevedon, Bristol, BS21 7QS.
1.5Jeff Birkin will skipper a cruise to the Scilly Isles on September 10 – 17. Cornish Cruising’s charter period is from 1600 on Saturday September 10 until 1000 on Saturday 17. This is fully booked, and the cost is £175 per person. All deposits have been paid, and the balance of £125 was due by July 25th – two payments are outstanding; please pay the Treasurer (address in 1.4 above) as soon as possible.
2.Recent Trips
A summary of all trips reported at meetings is given here, or a full report, if available. Members reporting at a meeting are reminded that a full version of the report should be provided, either written or emailed. If this isn’t available, then only a short summary will be given in the newsletter. Full reports will be included in the next newsletter following receipt.
We had several reports at the July meeting, both BSA charters and members’ sailing on other trips. The reports of the “non-BSA” trips have already been distributed, both by post and email. These were Sue Fowle’s report on a charter from Gocek in Turkey, Bob Buchanan’s tale of a stormy sail from Weymouth to the Solent followed by the Round the Island Race, and Jock Playle’s report of the problems – tides, restricted lock times and diversions due to firing ranges – of sailing the Severn Estuary.
The BSA charter reports were from Bob Hayes on a Croatian cruise, Alan Howells on l’Aber Wrac’h race week, and Chris Baxendale on a midweek sail from Hamble skippered by Chris Watts. These three reports follow.
