1. Future Trips

1.1 Jerzy Wieczorek is doing a Yachtmaster training trip in September, which will be on a Jeanneau 37 from Hamble Yacht Charter at Mercury Yacht Harbour on the weekend of September 9 – 11. As a Solent high season charter this will cost £190 per person. Jeff Birkin and Dave Lloyd will oversee this. This is fully booked, with some on a reserve list. Final payment of £140 is due by August 10th.

1.2 Following a cancellation there is now one place available on Ian Collins’ week’s cruise from Neyland to Ireland starting on September 12th. We hope to have confirmation details from Pembrokeshire Cruising at our meeting on August 8th.

1.4 Several members asked for a charter in August. Ian Collins, who is now an approved skipper for GSA (Go Sailing Association) has chartered their Dufour 34 based in Plymouth from August 18th – 25th. This trip is being sailed in two parts, a weekend from the 18th – 21st which is fully booked, and a midweek sail from the 21st – 25th for which there may be one place available. This will be confirmed at the meeting on August 8th. Ian can charter this boat with a crew from BSA PROVIDED ALL THOSE WHO GO JOIN GSA. This costs just £40 per year and with low charter fees makes for low cost sailing (cheaper and more accessible than Phoenix was). So far Ian and three other BSA members have joined GSA, with several other intending to join.. Details about GSA including joining are on the website .

2. News

2.1 Go sailing. Phil Steele sailed on a skills assessment weekend with GSA on the weekend of July 30th (his birthday as it happens!) and has been approved as a skipper of GSA boats. Now that we are chartering GSA boats Phil has asked that we establish a protocol for booking and paying for these trips, as this cannot be done by BSA as a club. We will discuss this at the meeting on August 8th.

3. Recent trips

At the July meeting Becky Goddard gave a report on the Round the Island race on June 25th, as well as an earlier practice weekend, and Ian Collins reported on his first sail as skipper of a GSA boat, the Dufour 34 from Plymouth, a week to Penzance and back. Sue Fowle described 10 days sailing on a charter in Sardinia.. We also have the second of this year’s reports from Chris and Julia Wallace sailing ‘Aremiti’ in the Hebrides. (This is included with printed newsletters but is attached as a separate PDF file with emailed ones.)
