Future Trips
The Commodore of the Phoenix Yacht Club Bob Goff has contacted me to say that during this summer's extended cruise their yacht Quartette will be based in Falmouth for the first 2 weeks of July. The planned skipper has had to withdraw and, rather than leave the boat unused, Bob has suggested that BSA may wish to use her, with one of our skippers approved to sail PYC yachts. There are two periods, July 1 - 7 and 8 - 14. The PYC programme gives "Cornwall, south coast and Scilly Isles" as the cruising area for these periods.PYC summer sailing costs are £30 per day weekdays and £47 per day weekends.Chris Watts is available for the first week, and will skipper Quartette from July 2nd – 6th with a full crew of BSA and PYC members. Will anyone else interested in the second week please contact Gordon, tel. 01275 462473, email gofmo18@talktalk.net
1.1We have booked a Sigma 362 from Falmouth for the Helford - l’Aber Wrac’h race on June 29 – 30, skippered by Alan Howells. The charter is from 4 pm on Wednesday June 27 until 4 pm on Wednesday July 4, to give two days’ sailing in north Brittany before returning to Falmouth after the race. Crew arrangements have been sent to all going.
1.2Gordon Ogden was to skipper a midweek charter from Plymouth on Monday June 25 to Wednesday 27th. This is fully booked and paid, and crew information has been sent to all going. Unfortunately Gordon has injured his shoulder and Colin Hodges, who was mate for the trip, will now skipper.
1.3To watch the J-class racing due to take place in the Solent on Wednesday July 18 – Saturday 21st, we have booked two boats from Hamble Point for a one-day charter on Thursday July 19th. Some members of each crew (and others not going on the day sail) have also booked for a cross-Channel trip skippered by Jeff Birkin to follow the day sail, starting early on the morning of Friday 20 July and returning to Hamble Point on Monday evening.
The current position with these rather complicated arrangements is that all 10 crew booked for each of the day sails paid a deposit or in full. The boat for the cross-Channel trip, which is a different one from either of the two day sail boats to meet the need for 8 berths (the Najad for example has only 7 berths despite its size) will cost £165 per person. All deposits for this have been paid. There is one day sail balance payment of £35 due which is needed by June 29th. For the cross-Channel trip the £115 balance will also be due by June 29th (two are still owed). All payments to the Treasurer, Mrs J R Jenkyn, Edgecliff, 12 Marine Parade, Clevedon, BS21 7QS. Alternatively you may pay by bank transfer to the account of Bristol Sailing Association at Barclays Bank, account number 40853062, sort code 20-13-34. If you pay by bank transfer please email the treasurer (janejenkyn@blueyonder.co.uk ) to advise her.
I will check with Hamble Point Charters before the next meeting on July 9 to ask if the day sail crew could stay on board the previous night, Thursday June 18th.
1.4For Jeff Birkin’s proposed trip for a week in September, from the 7th - 14th, most of those who were interested in this trip prefer to go to the Scilly Isles, starting from Plymouth, rather than a trip from Milford Haven. This was confirmed at the meeting on June 11th. A boat has now been booked and the charter will be from 1200 on Monday September 10th until 1700 on Sunday 16th (so there is no need to take the Friday afternoon off). This is fully booked and will cost £179 per person. Please pay a deposit of £50 now, payment details in 1.3 above.
1.5Malcolm Price is arranging a charter from Oban in western Scotland to sail the Whisky Trail for a week starting on September 22nd. More details will be available in due course, but in the meantime a charter cost of £1100 – 1500 has been mentioned. Malcolm has been sent the contact details of those who had previously said they were interested. Will anyone else interested please contact Malcolm, tel. 07889 772149, email malcolm.price2@blueyonder.co.uk .
1.6The proposed early October charter in Turkey will not now take place.
1.7There will be a weekend trip on September 28 – 30 skippered by Alan Howells. We have chartered a Jeanneau SunFast 37 from Sail West at Sutton Harbour Plymouth, which is available with an extra day from the Thursday evening until Sunday at the standard weekend cost of £570. Alan will arrange this to accommodate anyone going who cannot arrive until the Friday evening, as well as those arriving on the Thursday evening. There is one place still available on this trip, at a cost of £95 for the 2 or 3 days. Will those going please now pay a deposit of £50 (details in 3.1 above).
Rescheduling the cancelled April 27 “girls/boys race” charter from Plymouth.
Although at one time the weekend of October 19 – 21 seemed to be the most likely date to try to do this, several of the original crews are not now available, and a few have yet to reply. It is possible that it will not now take place. Liberty have refunded us in full, and we asked those who had booked whether they preferred to have their £93 refunded now, or left in the BSA account for a future trip. A few have not replied to this. Will all those who have not given available dates please let me (Jock) know, and will those who have not given their money option please tell Jane Jenkyn (01275 880318).
2.Recent Trips
At the June meeting Alan Howells reported on the cross-Channel trip from Plymouth which he skippered on May 31 – June 6 (the “Jubilee escape trip”). Gordon Ogden reported briefly on sailing a Najad 400 with Mike Quick on Solent day sails the previous weekend. Finally Sue Fowle reported on a charter in Sicily skippered by Peter Wakeling, notable for sailing round the regularly erupting Stromboli, and for an unplanned and unnoticed nighttime wander through moorings and past jetties attached to a wayward mooring buoy, without mishap.

News and notices.
3.1During the winter we had some “teach-in” sessions at meetings – knots and ropework, port entry pilotage – and we aim to continue this in the autumn. If anyone has any ideas of what they would like – navigation refresher, tidal calculations, safety equipment, whatever – please let us know.
3.2A few years ago Alan Howells sailed with two of our members for a few days before they took their RYA Coastal Skipper exam, practising the various things they would have to do during the exam. Both were successful and gained their certificates. Alan has offered to repeat this with any members who wish to take the practical Yachtmaster (Coastal) or Yachtmaster (Offshore) exams. This would not be a formal RYA course, but a chance to practise the various items listed in the RYA examiners’ handbook (which Alan has), and would be for those of our members with the knowledge, experience and required sea time to take the exam at the end of the practice session. This would probably be on the Plymouth-based Westerly GK29, with intensive exercises in Plymouth Sound. Alan is preparing notes on this which will be available soon.
