Future Trips
1.1Jeff Birkin will skipper a weekend trip from Plymouth on July 5 – 7. This was fully booked, but one crew has had to withdraw following an injury. Will anyone who would like to take this place please let me (Jock, tel. as above) and Jeff (01275 879024) know. The cost is £117, which includes the gas charge.
1.2Jeff will also skipper a cruise from Milford Haven, hopefully to southern Ireland, for a week Sunday July 14 – 21. This is fully booked and paid.
1.3Alan Howells will skipper a week’s charter to NW France (including the islands of Sein and Molene) on Thursday August 22 – 29. We have been able to book a boat from Falmouth rather than Plymouth, a Beneteau Oceanis 390 from Kernow charters at Mylor Yacht Harbour. The week’s charter will cost £1400 for the boat. At present there are five definite crew, so one place is still available. Will anyone interested please reply to Jock and Alan (0117 944 2618). We have had to pay a 50% deposit, so we need a deposit of £100 from each person going as soon as possible.
1.4Alan Howells and Jeff Birkin will skipper two weekends from Plymouth in late September / early October for boat handling training. Alan will concentrate on handling under sail, and Jeff under power, but other skills will be included such as night pilotage. These will be Plymouth – based (i.e. going nowhere else) and are not for “leisure” sailing.
1.5A September trip was requested by Paula Gray at the last meeting – we need a skipper for this – which will be followed up at the July meeting.
2.News and notices
2.1During Alan’s recent trip to Cherbourg he found changes to the marina under way. He has provided the following information which will be useful for anyone going there in future.
Although I always thought them excellent the Cherbourg authorities did not think that the marina faciliites were up to standard and are demolishing and rebuilding them in the same place! The marina office is close to the rebuilding works so easy to find. All computer records are still there so details of yacht pop up on their screen as soon as they type in the name. The public toilets near the end of pontoon N close to the visitors moorings have been taken over and now require code number (given when you pay for mooring) access. There is another temporary structure close by that has showers again with code number access. The number of WCs is limited - rather more showers. There are lots of guides and brochures in the marina office but one simply entitled Cherbourg Marina guide and about 5" X 4" is excellent giving lots of info about Cherbourg as well as the marina. Some of the marina information is not. I think, available from the almanac and in particular info on the visitors pontoons. Of interest to us amongst the visitors pontoons stuff is:N & P pontoons both sides for yachts of 9-12 metresQ pontoon West side 12- 14 metresQ pontoon East side 14+ metres. If a cat ever becomes available for charter again that is also where to moor being alongside rather than finger.Hose pipes for water may be borrowed from the marina office.

3.Recent Trips
At the June meeting Don Hirst reported on the weekend trip from Plymouth skippered by Jeff Birkin on May 31 – June 2. Gordon Ogden talked about a weekend of day sails from Hamble Point with Michael Quick – effectively a corporate jolly for Michael’s son in law and his colleagues. Don’s report follows.
