1. Future Trips
1.1 Jerzy Wieczorek is doing a Yachtmaster training trip in September, which will be on a Jeanneau 37 from Hamble Yacht Charter at Mercury Yacht Harbour on the weekend of September 9 – 11. As a Solent high season charter this will cost £190 per person. Jeff Birkin and Dave Lloyd will oversee this. This is fully booked, with some on a reserve list. Final payment of £140 is due by August 10th.
1.2 As it has proved impossible to obtain a charter for the Helford – lAberWrac’h race on June 25th, and Ian Collins’ new boat ‘Freemalkin’ will not be ready in time, Ian and Jeff are considering planning for next year. This would give the crew time to get used to handling a wishbone-boom boat with an unstayed mast and no headsail – look online for Freedom Cat Ketch for details. Ian would like to know who would be interested.
1.3 Ian Collins will skipper a week’s cruise from Neyland to Ireland starting on September 12th. This is provisionally fully booked, and details will be confirmed next month.
1.4 Several members have asked for a weekend charter in August. Ian Collins, who is now an approved skipper for GSA (Go Sailing Association) has looked at the availability of their Dufour 34 based in Plymouth, and there are many dates available in July and August. Ian could charter this boat with a crew from BSA PROVIDED ALL THOSE WHO GO JOIN GSA. This costs just £40 per year and with low charter fees makes for low cost sailing (cheaper and more accessible than Phoenix was). So far Ian and three other BSA members have joined GSA, with several other intending to join. Will anyone who would like to join Ian on a trip from Plymouth on the Dufour this summer (probably four is a comfortable crew) please contact him (tel. 07908 765893, email ). Details about GSA including joining are on the website .
2. News
2.1 Weston Bay Yacht Club. Sonia Russé recently visited Weston Bay Yacht Club and was asked to pass on the following invitation to BSA members
Open invite to BSA Members from Weston Bay Yacht Club
Several of their 100 plus members own their own boats and on Thursdays weather and tide permitting they offer free sailing experiences. Their Club House on the beach at Uphill has good showers etc and is open for social interaction every Friday evening from 8.00pm. Just ring the door/ knock on the door and tell them you are a BSA member. Annual social membership is just £10 pa.
Sailing in Weston Bay is a challenge however they are 35 mins closer to clear water than Portishead and are frequently shanghaied in Cardiff, Lundy Island, Ilfracombe, Padstow and even the Scillies.
As with all sailors they are a friendly warm hearted bunch and are supporting my Mayor’s Charity ( NSPCWT ) a Forum for Parent Carers Working Together with a long list of conditions from Autism to physical disability often not statemented and fall outside NHS and Local Authority support dependant on grants .
As for the Club there are a number of activities planned over the summer months including their 2022 Regatta on 16th/17th July so check out their website. You will be very welcome.

3. Recent trips
At the June meeting we had reports from Harvey Freer on a weekend from Plymouth skippered by Gordon Ogden, and from Phil Steele on the weekend he skippered from Plymouth in lieu of the report by Brian Adams which is now available. Bob Buchanan gave two very different reports, a brief one a training weekend for the Round the Island race later in June, and one on a charter in Sardinia, which is printed below. We also have the first of this year’s reports from Chris and Julia Wallace sailing ‘Aremiti’ on the west coast of Scotland. (This is included with printed newsletters but is attached as a separate PDF file with emailed ones.)
