Future Trips
1.1As no boats were available from Plymouth over the early May Bank Holiday weekend, Alan Howells’ cross-Channel trip will now be from Hamble Point, possibly to St Malo, the Channel Islands, Cherbourg or maybe Tréguier and adjacent north Brittany ports. This will be a long weekend, from Thursday evening to Tuesday (May 2nd – 7th), and is now fully booked, with all initial payments received. For those who paid a £50 instalment, the final payment of £175 is due by April 15th.
1.2Jeff Birkin would like to skipper a cruise from Milford Haven to southern Ireland early in June. We now know that no boats are available for the first two weeks of June as originally proposed, but it could be a 7-day trip on Sunday June 16 – 23. There are one or two places available. Depending on numbers, the cost would be about £150 – 200 for the 7-day charter.
1.3Jeff Birkin would also like to skipper a boat in this year’s PASAB (Penzance around Scilly and back) race weekend on July 26 - 29. The details are:
Race briefing at 18:30 on Friday, 26 July 2013 at the Penzance Sailing Club clubhouse.

PASAB prizegiving at 20:00 on Saturday, 3 August 2013 at the Penzance Sailing Club clubhouse.
Saturday is a free day for cruising in the Scilly Isles at leisure.
Availability of a boat from Plymouth or Falmouth for racing is uncertain at present. If one is available from Plymouth Jeff has said he would sail from Plymouth with a small delivery crew on the Wednesday or Thursday, and back on the following Tuesday, with the full crew needed from Friday to Monday. Three or four members have expressed interest; anyone else interested please let us know.
1.4Alan Howells would again like to skipper a boat in the Helford – l’Aber Wrac’h race, which will probably be on Friday June 28th. A week’s charter from Plymouth on Wednesday June 26th – Wednesday July 3rd would be needed, with two days’ cruising north Brittany after the race. We have three interested at present, so another 2 -3 experienced crew needed. Again, boat availability for racing is uncertain at present.
1.5We have several proposals for weekend charters in July and August, with suggested dates of July 6th, August 3rd, or the Bank Holiday weekend of August 24/26. Alan Howells may be available to skipper in August, but Chris Watts is not now available for the July 6th date. We need to firm up on these at the April meeting
2.News and notices
2.1First Aid
A number of us took the RYA one-day First Aid course on board Sabrina on Sunday May 2nd 2010. As this is valid for 3 years, the certificates expire in five weeks time. Brian Howell, who took the 2010 course, will again be our instructor for a day course on Sunday May 26th (the only May Sunday for which he is available) on board Sabrina. It will cost £25 (compared to the usual commercial rate of £75) and will be from 10.00 am – 4.30 pm. Several members have already booked, and there is space for one or two more. Will anyone else who wants to renew their certificate, or obtain one for the first time, (necessary for validity of a Yachtmaster certificate) please let me know as soon as possible.
Will those going note that the bar on Sabrina will not be open, so you need to bring your own drinks and lunch.
3.Recent Trips
At the March meeting we had reports from Mike Berry and Don Hirst on the PYC yacht trips on Spellbinder and Quartette on February 18 – 20 skippered by Gordon Ogden and Chris Watts, Bob Buchanan (a sail on Lady Emma) and Sue Fowle on a charter in St Vincent and the Grenadines. Here are these reports:
