Future Trips
Helford – l’Aber Wrac’h race, June 22 – 29. We have chartered a boat from Falmouth for this. The race starts on Friday June 24, with post-race meal etc. on the Saturday evening. The charter will be from Wednesday 22nd , returning to Falmouth by 10.00 on the 29th, allowing 3 days for a short cruise in Brittany and the return Channel crossing. Alan Howells will skipper. This is now fully booked and paid, including racing insurance. Alan will complete the race entry paperwork on the day; the race entry fee is £40.
Chris Watts will skipper a midweek trip from Hamble on June 27 – July 1, aiming for Alderney, Cherbourg and perhaps St Vaast, if the weather is suitable. There is one place still available, at a cost of £128.50 for the four days midday Monday to midday Friday. Please contact Jock if you would like to take this place.
1.3PASAB (Penzance, around Scillies, and back) races, July 29 – August 1. This is fully booked, with Bill Thomas as skipper. We will charter from Falmouth, which means picking up the boat on the evening of Wednesday 27th July and sailing to Penzance on the Thursday, for the start of the race to St Mary’s on Friday evening. Saturday is a free day for cruising with a race around the Islands on Sunday. The return race to Penzance is on the Monday, with the return sail to Falmouth on Tuesday. If Bill is only available for the weekend of the races Jeff Birkin will skipper the two Falmouth – Penzance legs, for which we have another three crew members available. The full cost will be £1300 for the boat, £220 racing insurance and £50 race entry which includes mooring fees at St Mary’s for 2 days, a total of £1570, = £262 per person. The balance of £192 was due by 6 June – two payments are outstanding; please send cheques, payable to BSA, to the Treasurer, Mrs J R Jenkyn, Edgecliff, 12 Marine Parade, Clevedon, Bristol, BS21 7QS.
Jeff Birkin will skipper a weekend from Mercury Marina, Hamble, on July 15 – 17. This is fully booked and will cost £120 per person including gas and fuel. The boat has been booked and deposits paid. The balance of £70 will be due by June 13th (please pay at the meeting that day, or send a cheque, payable to BSA, to the Treasurer, Mrs J R Jenkyn, Edgecliff, 12 Marine Parade, Clevedon, Bristol, BS21 7QS).
1.5Jeff Birkin will skipper a cruise to the Scilly Isles on September 10 – 17. Cornish Cruising’s charter period will be from 1600 on Saturday September 10 until 1000 on Saturday 17. This is fully booked, and the cost is £175 per person. All deposits have been paid, and the balance of £125 will be due by July 25th.
Alan Howells has said he would skipper a trip on the GK29 from Plymouth in July or August, probably cross-Channel to Tréguier. This would be a fairly demanding trip on a smaller (but very seaworthy and sea-kindly) yacht. Alan will confirm this when he returns from the l’Aber Wrac’h race in July, so let us know if you are interested. Alan may also skipper this boat more locally to Plymouth later in the year. This is the boat we have used, with Alan as skipper, for training boat- and sail-handling in the past two years. Please let us know if you are interested – we had several members who missed out on the previous training trips and said they would be interested in further ones.
Gordon Ogden will skipper a trip in September or October. Four or five members have said they are interested. A date will be confirmed at the July meeting. Gordon may also skipper an August trip, but is not yet sure if he might be available for this.
Announcements
BSA Bank Procedure. Recently several members have asked if they could pay subscriptions or trip costs by direct bank transfer. For this to become standard practice the Treasurer needs to be able to have immediate access to our bank account details, and also needs to know from the membership who has paid, when, and for what. The bank has informed us that this is possible, and we have the authorisation forms to enable us to go ahead. This was discussed at the May meeting, with emphasis on the necessity of those who pay by transfer also notifying the Treasurer to reference the payment. An additional benefit would be that the bank will provide us with a debit card, which would prove valuable when chartering from companies who require payment by card at the time of a telephone booking enquiry.
The meeting unanimously approved a proposal by Alan Howells, seconded by David Lloyd, that BSA would apply to the bank for a transfer facility, with the condition that members using it must email the Treasurer with information on the payments they make – name, trip reference, amount paid.
3.Recent Trips
A summary of all trips reported at meetings is given here, or a full report, if available. Members reporting at a meeting are reminded that a full version of the report should be provided, either written or emailed. If this isn’t available, then only a short summary will be given in the newsletter. Full reports will be included in the next newsletter following receipt.
There were two BSA trips on the Bank Holiday weekend of April 28 – May2. Bill Thomas skippered a charter from Falmouth and Jeff Birkin a cross-Channel trip from Hamble to Fécamp. Bernard Smyth’s report on the Falmouth trip and Steve Hall’s report on the Hamble – Fécamp one follow.
Bob Buchanan also briefly described a sail from Portishead with Claire Turner and Geoff Louch on Geoff’s boat on Sunday 8 May. It was good sailing in a southerly 4/5, occ 6 along the weather shore from Portishead past Portishead Point. They turned and went round Denny Island in rising wind, putting in 2 reefs and a small genoa. Further increase in wind dictated a return to Portishead marina after a most enjoyable day sail
