Future Trips

1.1Alan Howells will skipper a trip from Plymouth to Tréguier on the double Bank Holiday weekend, boarding on the afternoon/evening of Thursday May 31 and returning on Tuesday June 5th. This is fully booked and paid. The boat originally booked became unavailable and we have been upgraded at no extra cost to a Delphia 40. Due to some confusion with crew bookings this was rather overbooked with seven on board. However one crew has now transferred to the under booked l’Aber Wrac’h race charter. The trip was costed on a basis of the original seven crew, so there will now be an extra cost of £26 per person; all those going who were at the last meeting agreed that this would be included in the on-board expenses and collected by the skipper.

1.2We have booked a Sigma 362 from Falmouth for the Helford - l’Aber Wrac’h race on June 29 – 30, skippered by Alan Howells. The charter is from 4 pm on Wednesday June 27 until 4 pm on Wednesday July 4, to give two days’ sailing in north Brittany before returning to Falmouth after the race. One balance payment of £167 is still due.

1.3Gordon Ogden will skipper a midweek charter from Plymouth on Monday June 25 to Wednesday 27th. This will cost £114 per person, which is due now as we have paid the full charter fee. Will those going please send a cheque to the Treasurer, Mrs J R Jenkyn, Edgecliff, 12 Marine Parade, Clevedon, BS21 7QS. Alternatively you may pay by bank transfer to the account of Bristol Sailing Association at Barclays Bank, account number 40853062, sort code 20-13-34. If you pay by bank transfer please email the treasurer (janejenkyn@blueyonder.co.uk ) to advise her.

1.4To watch the J-class racing due to take place in the Solent on Wednesday July 18 – Saturday 21st, we have booked two boats from Hamble Point for a one-day charter on Thursday July 19th. Originally we booked a Najad 400 with a full crew of 10 at a cost of £54 perperson. At the meeting on February 13 there was yet more interest to give a second crew of 10 for a day sail, and we booked a Dufour 40 at £55 per person. Some members of each crew (and others not going on the day sail) have also booked for a cross-Channel trip skippered by Jeff Birkin to follow the day sail, starting early on the morning of Friday 20 July and returning to Hamble Point on Monday evening.

The current position with these rather complicated arrangements is that all 10 crew booked for each of the day sails have confirmed and paid a deposit or in full. The boat for the cross-Channel trip, which is a different one from either of the two day sail boats to meet the need for 8 berths (the Najad for example has only 7 berths despite its size) will cost £165 per person. All deposits for this have been paid. The balances of payments for both the day sails are needed by June 29th. For the cross-Channel trip the £115 balance will also be due by June 29th. All payments to the Treasurer, details in 1.3 above. (There was an error in the April newsletter when this balance was incorrectly given as £65.)

1.5For Jeff Birkin’s proposed trip for a week in September, from the 8th - 15th, most of who were interested in this trip prefer to go to the Scilly Isles, starting from Plymouth, rather than a trip from Milford Haven. This will be discussed at the meeting on June 11th, as not all the proposed crew were at the May meeting to discuss the options.

1.6Malcolm Price is arranging a charter from Oban in western Scotland to sail the Whisky Trail for a week starting on September 22nd. More details will be available in due course, but in the meantime a charter cost of £1100 – 1500 has been mentioned. We may have six members interested at present.

1.7At the May meeting two other possible trips were suggested, an early October charter in Turkey, which Peter Wakeling may be available to skipper (he will let us know next month), and a weekend trip on September 22 or 29 skippered by Alan Howells. We will try to firm up on these at the June meeting.

2.Recent Trips

At the April meeting there was no BSA sailing report as the two boat charter from Plymouth on April 27th had been cancelled due to the severe gales that weekend.

Trip on Crack On, skippered by Becky Goddard

3.1BSA website Chris Wallace, who is responsible for our excellent new website (do have a look at it if you haven’t already – www.bristolsailing.org.uk ) asks that you include some waypoints in trip reports, especially for places like obscure Croatian Islands, so that he can put them on the map. (It would also avoid apparent overland sailing!) Chris also gives a reminder to send photos, including those of boats we sail regularly.

3.2Round the Island Race – from Gale Force 8 (Shropshire Lady)

Just a few places now available on this highly popular race weekend.  The yacht is an 8 berth Bavaria 350, full RYA coded, carrying spinnaker. Professional racing skipper. Last year we came 267 overall out of nearly 2000 entries so you wont be bored as the boat is very competitive.

Am offering a package.  Race practice Friday 29th June, nightstop Cowes yacht haven. Race Saturday nightstop Cowes yacht haven,  cruise home on the sunday. Soft drinks on board throughout, plus racing lunch Friday, Saturday. The price is £240 for the three days with £150 mooring fees for two nights shared.

3.4Sailing opportunity to Brest for the Festival A friend of Chris Wallace, Ken Waddilove, is looking for crew for a sail from Bristol to the Brest Maritime Festival, July 13 – 19. He plans to leave Bristol on July 7th, returning by August 7th. He has two experienced crew already, and is looking for others either for the full 4 weeks or the 2-week return leg.
