Future Trips

1.1As last year, Phil Steele will skipper a “Xmas Lights” trip from Falmouth, on the weekend of December 16 – 18th. (This is a week later than last year, in the hope that the lights at Fowey will have been switched on!) As the intended boat has been replaced by a larger one there are one or two places available for this trip; will anyone who would like to go please phone or email Jock (0117 973 8855, jockplayle3@waitrose.com). It will cost £80 if one more goes, £67 if two go.

2.Recent Trips

A summary of all trips reported at meetings is given here, or a full report, if available. Members reporting at a meeting are reminded that a full version of the report should be provided, either written or emailed. If this isn’t available, then only a short summary will be given in the newsletter. Full reports will be included in the next newsletter following receipt.

At the November meeting Jeff Birkin reported on a trip he skippered from Milford Haven in mid-October. Bernard Smyth gave a brief report of sailing on “Spellbinder” skippered by former member Dave Price, and instead of reading the report of another Spellbinder trip he was on, skippered by Gordon, passed it to Kath to read. Alan Howells reported on a training trip he skippered from Plymouth on a GK29. These reports follow, with one by Sue Fowle on a charter in Croatia, skippered by Malcolm Price.

3Announcements

3.1Membership renewal. Will those members who have not yet renewed please note that the Treasurer will be away until mid-January, and all renewals (cheques, payable to BSA, plus the renewal form sent by post last month) should be sent to the Secretary - Jock Playle, 3 Iddesleigh Road, Bristol, BS6 6YL. It would help if those who do not wish to rejoin email to tell me: jockplayle3@waitrose.com .

3.2Christmas meal. Gordon has arranged this for Tuesday 20 December at 7.30 pm at the Avon Gorge Hotel, Bristol. All payments and menu choices have been received.

3.3J-class racing. Next year there will be a J-class regatta in Falmouth and the Solent. It has been suggested that we charter to watch this rare event in the Solent. There will be three races on Wednesday – Friday July 18 – 20 in the Solent, and a “100 guinea cup” (later renamed the America’s Cup) race around the Isle of Wight on Saturday 21st. Up to nine classic yachts will be racing, including three original J-class from the 1930s (Shamrock V, Velsheda and Endeavour). Will anyone interested please let us know.

And finally…On the next page is an unusual photo of “Lady Emma”, Becca Hayward’s Barberis Cantieri 41, taken by Bob Buchanan, who sent it with the following explanation:

I was on Lady Emma the weekend 22/23 October with Becca Hayward and Becky Goddard. It was quite eventful. We were going down Southampton water close hauled, when we herd a twang from the Genoa and it slid down the forestay. The shackle had snapped and the recoil shot the Genoa halyard skywards and took out the Windex (hawk).

We replaced it in Port Solent ( the hawk) and I took this picture while I was up the mast.
