Members will know that Nick Kinsley was unwell some time ago, and we have heard that he was rushed to London 2 weeks ago and underwent a liver transplant. The operation was successful, and Nick is now out of intensive care and said to be progressing well. We send him our best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

Future Trips

1.1Unfortunately Phil Steele has had to cancel the midweek sail planned for Monday November 2nd – Wednesday 4th on ‘Quartette’.

1.2Gordon Ogden will skipper ‘Spellbinder’ for a midweek sail on Monday November 9th – Wednesday 11th. This is fully booked and details sent to all crew.

1.3Chris Watts will skipper ‘Spellbinder’ for a midweek sail on Monday December 7th – Wednesday 9Th. This is fully booked.

1.4Phil will skipper ‘Quartette’ for Jane’s Christmas Party sail on the weekend of December 19/20. There is one place available.

Chris Baxendale has suggested a week’s sail next spring from Plymouth or Falmouth along the south coast. This is a long time away, but would anyone interested in this please let us know.

News and Notices

2.1Christmas Meal.

Our venue this year is the Olive Shed, situated on Princes Wharf on the Bristol harbourside, just along from the M-shed museum. An advantage is a large pay-and-display car park just behind it. Gordon Ogden has made a booking for TUESDAY DECEMBER 22nd. The Olive Shed has said that they will open exclusively for BSA that evening (providing we have sufficient numbers). As of the meeting on October 12th 27 people have confirmed. A few more would be welcome (last year we were 35) so anyone who would like to go and hasn’t yet booked please contact Gordon, tel. 01275 462473, email gordon.ogden18@gmail.com as soon as possible.

The Olive Shed Christmas menu was sent to members earlier. A choice of either 2 or 3 courses is available. Payment will be needed with your booking, either £25 for the 2-course choice or £30 for 3 courses. (The small extra cost will go towards the service charge.) Please pay by sending a cheque payable Mr G Ogden (NOT to BSA) at 18 The Crescent, Backwell, Bristol, BS48 3NL.

2.2Membership renewal.

Current membership expires on October 31st and a renewal form has been sent to all members. Please bring this with your subscription to the meeting on November 9th. Alternatively, either send it with a cheque to the Treasurer, Mrs R A Goddard, 29 The Old Silk Mill, Coombe Lane, Shepton Mallet, BA4 5XA, or pay by bank transfer to the account of Bristol Sailing Association at Barclays Bank, account number 40853062, sort code 20-13-34, using reference BSAsub and your surname. If you pay by bank transfer please email the Treasurer becky@thesilkmill7.fsnet.co.uk to advise her and give any change of contact details.

2.3OscarLine

Jeff Birkin showed his Oscar MoB trials video and the equipment to the PYC Sailing Committee on October 12th. As a result, the Oscar practice kit will be available for use on board ‘Quartette’.

3.Recent Trips

At the October meeting there were reports by Alan Howells and Jerzy Wieczorek on the two-boat trip from Plymouth on October 2-4, and two reports by Sue Fowle and Bernard Smyth on charters in Mallorca. All these are in this newsletter as well as a report on a ‘Lady Emma’ Solent Weekend which Bob Buchanan had no time to give in full at the meeting. (Secretary’s note: I was unable to be at the meeting on October 12, and I believe there were other trips reported. I have no copies of these, but will include them in a later newsletter if they are emailed to me.)
