Future Trips
1.1Phil Steele will skipper a weekend charter on September 26/28th from Plymouth. This is fully booked. It will cost £104 per person, plus fuel, food and mooring. As Jane will be away from October 2nd, payment must reach her by September 26th.
1.3Gordon Ogden will skipper a midweek sail on the Phoenix YC yacht “Spellbinder” on Monday November 17th – Wednesday 19th (boarding at Gosport on Sunday evening 16th). There is one place available for this; will anyone who would like to go please contact Gordon, tel. 01275 462473. The cost will be £17 per day, plus food, fuel, mooring. No advance payment is needed as the skipper collects all payments on the day to forward to Phoenix.
1.4Phil Steele will skipper another weekend charter, this time in the Solent, on October 24 – 26th. This is now fully booked and will cost £91 per person. Please send payment to the Treasurer (address in 1.1 above) by September 26th (£41 for those who have paid a deposit of £50, and the full £91 for those who have recently booked).
2.Announcements
2.1Please note that the Secretary will be away from September 15th to October 17th, and the Treasurer from October 2nd until November 3rd. This means that
All payments due for sailing in October must be sent to the Treasurer before September 26th.
All enquiries about forthcoming charters should be addressed to the appropriate skipper, not the Secretary.
The AGM, normally held just before the October meeting, will be on Monday November 10th.
Membership renewal forms will be sent out before the November meeting.
2.2Ian Harding was in Bremerhaven recently where the Tall Ships race was about to start. He noticed that several were advertising for crew. The fleet will be in Falmouth this coming weekend until the start of the next leg to Aveiro in Portugal on September 13th. There would seem to be the possibility of crewing at a cost of £60 per day. From Aveiro they head to Funchal in Madeira.
2.3Bob Buchanan reported that during a recent dinghy race at Shirehampton SC on a windy evening there were several capsizes, as would be expected. To everyone’s amazement three police cars arrived at the club, followed overhead by a helicopter. Apparently a motorist crossing the Avon Bridge had seen a capsized dinghy and, not realising this was normal for dinghy racing, dialled 999 (for the police, not the coastguard).
3.Recent Trips
A summary of all trips reported at meetings is given here, or a full report, if available. Members reporting at a meeting are reminded that a full version of the report should be provided, either written or emailed. If this isn’t available, then only a short summary will be given in the newsletter. Full reports will be included with the next newsletter following receipt.
At the September meeting we had three reports. Jenny Ball, reverting to a format used a few years ago, gave a poetic report of a charter from Plymouth on the weekend of August 17/19, skippered by Malcolm Price. Becky Goddard reported on a windy weekend in the Solent on Becca Hayward’s yacht “Lady Emma”. Bob Hayes described a weekend from the Solent to Poole in a Halberg Rassy which sprang a leak in a through-hull fitting. All these full reports follow:
