At the meeting on December 12th we welcomed Lee Davies and Dave Britton as guests.

Future Trips

1.1Phil Steele’s “Xmas Lights” trip from Falmouth on the weekend of December 16 – 18th was cancelled the day before by Cornish Cruising due to a forecast of winds in excess of 30K. Although in Bristol the weekend weather was not so bad, on Saturday RNAS Culdrose a few miles from Falmouth reported NW winds of 25 – 30 K with gusts of 40K. Cornish Cruising have given no time limit for rescheduling this trip, which is fully paid, so the skipper and crew need to find an alternative date (or even alternative crew, if any of those booked want to withdraw).

Phil Steele will skipper a Solent weekend on a PYC boat (maintenance schedule permitting) on January 20 – 22nd. Depending on which boat is available, there are one or two places available. Phil could also skipper another PYC boat weekend on February 17 – 19.

1.3Again subject to availability of PYC yachts, Gordon Ogden and Chris Watts hope to skipper a midweek trip with both boats, Spellbinder and Quartette, on Monday February 6th to Wednesday 8th. Again possibly one or two places available

1.4Jeff Birkin would like to skipper a boat in the Round the Island race on Saturday June 30. Two years ago he did this as part of the Sunsail matched fleet, with Sunsail’s race package. This year Sunsail has a new fleet of 40 Beneteau F40s, which will have their own class for the race. The complete package, which includes charter from 0900 on Friday June 29 to 1700 on Sunday July 1st, marina berths at Cowes Yacht Haven on Friday and Saturday, race entry fee, engine hours, wet weather gear and shore support costs £3000. The boat sleeps 8, so that is £375 per person. A 25% deposit (£95 pp) is needed to book and is non-returnable. In view of the significant cost BSA cannot book a boat until we have full deposit payment. If we are to do this we need to book very soon. Will anyone interested please let Jeff (01275 879024, jeffbirkin@hotmail.com ) and Jock (0117 973 8855, jockplayle3@waitrose.com ) know as soon as possible. (We need some experienced crew, with spinnaker handling).

1.5At the last meeting Sue Fowle mentioned the J-class racing due to take place in the Solent on Wednesday July 18 – Saturday 21st. Who would be interested in a charter to watch these events? The weekday races are in the Solent, and the Saturday one is round the Island. It has been suggested that a one-day charter on one of the midweek days in the Solent may be the best option.

1.6We also have a potential crew for next year’s Helford – l’Aber Wrac’h race. Alan will skipper, and is looking into the possibility of chartering the Swan 38 ‘Cimaroon’ from Falmouth.

2.Recent Trips

A summary of all trips reported at meetings is given here, or a full report, if available. Members reporting at a meeting are reminded that a full version of the report should be provided, either written or emailed. If this isn’t available, then only a short summary will be given in the newsletter. Full reports will be included in the next newsletter following receipt.

At the December meeting John Hartland reported on the midweek cruise on Spellbinder to Poole on November 21 – 23, skippered by Gordon Ogden. David Brown described a family charter in Croatia, in a different area from those reported earlier this year. These reports follow.
