Future Trips
Bank Holiday weekend April 28 – May 2. (Thanks to the royal wedding, Friday 29 April is now a public holiday, and Monday May 2 is the late spring Bank Holiday.)
Bill Thomas will skipper a trip from Falmouth boarding on the afternoon of Friday 29th, returning on the evening of Monday May 2. This is fully booked and paid.
Jeff Birkin will skipper a cross-Channel trip from Hamble Point, Thursday evening April 28 to Monday May 2. This is now fully booked. The total cost will be £196 per person and the balance of £146 is due by April 11th. Please pay at the meeting on that date, or send a cheque, payable to BSA, to Jock Playle at 3 Iddesleigh Road, Bristol, BS6 6YL.
Jeff Birkin will skipper a weekend sail from Haslar Marina, Gosport, on May 20 – 22. This is now fully booked and will cost £124.30 per person. The balance of £74.30 is due by April 25th.
Bill Thomas will skipper a weekend trip from Plymouth on June 3 – 5. This is now fully booked and will cost £115 per person. The balance of £65 will be due by May 2nd.
Helford – l’Aber Wrac’h race, June 22 – 29. We have chartered a boat from Falmouth for this. The race starts on Friday June 24, with post-race meal etc. on the Saturday evening. The charter will be from Wednesday 23, returning to Falmouth on the 30th, allowing 3 days for a short cruise in Brittany and the return Channel crossing. Alan Howells will skipper. This is now fully booked and will cost £230 per person including racing insurance. The balance of £160 will be due by May 2nd.
PASAB (Penzance, around Scillies, and back) races, July 29 – August 1. This is already fully booked, with Bill Thomas as skipper. We will charter from Falmouth, which means picking up the boat on the evening of Wednesday 27th July and sailing to Penzance on the Thursday, for the start of the race to St Mary’s on Friday evening. Saturday is a free day for cruising with a race around the Islands on Sunday. The return race to Penzance is on the Monday, with the return sail to Falmouth on Tuesday. Bill may be only available for the weekend of the races, and Jeff Birkin will skipper the two Falmouth – Penzance legs, for which we have another two crew members available. The full cost will be £1300 for the boat, £220 racing insurance and £50 race entry which includes mooring fees at St Mary’s for 2 days, a total of £1570, = £262 per person. The balance of £192 will be due by 6 June.
At the last meeting another member said he would like to take part. For this we would need another boat, and five more crew. Will anyone else who would like to go please let us know by the meeting on April 11th and we will see if it can be arranged.
2011 Med charter. This is a charter from Kremik in Croatia, to be skippered by Phil Steele, on June 11-18, and is fully booked. Bob Hayes has booked the boat from Sunsail and made the flight bookings. All deposits and travel costs have been paid. To ensure that BSA is involved in paying the balance (to validate our indemnity insurance) all balance payments have been made to BSA and transferred to the secretary, who will pay Sunsail, who do not accept cheques and charge an exorbitant fee for credit cards, by debit card.
Jeff Birkin will skipper a weekend from Mercury Marina, Hamble, on July 15 – 17. This is fully booked and will cost £120 per person including gas and fuel. The boat has been booked and will those going please now send a deposit of £50 (payable to BSA) to the Treasurer, Mrs J R Jenkyn, Edgecliff, 12 Marine Parade, Clevedon, Bristol, BS21 7QS.
Jeff Birkin will skipper a midweek cruise to the Scilly Isles on September 12 – 16. At the March meeting sufficient members said they were interested to make a full crew. We would probably book a boat from Falmouth for this, and as Cornish Cruising charge a full week’s charter fee for any charter of more than 3 days, the available period would be from 1600 on Saturday September 10 until 1000 on Saturday 17.
Other trips suggested.
Alan Howells has said he would skipper a trip on the GK29 from Plymouth in July or August. This is the boat we have used, with Alan as skipper, for training boat- and sail-handling in the past two years. Please let us know if you are interested – we had several members who missed out on the previous trips and said they would be interested in further ones.
At the March meeting a midweek charter was requested for half term week beginning May 30. Only two were interested, with no skipper, and the member who made the original request has since dropped out. Unless there is support for this at the April meeting it will be dropped.
Announcements
A reminder that Gordon announced at the AGM last October that he will be standing down as Commodore at this year’s AGM on October 10th. Nominations for Commodore should be sent to the Secretary by the proposer, with the name of the seconder and the agreement of the nominee to stand.
3.Recent Trips
A summary of all trips reported at meetings is given here, or a full report, if available. Members reporting at a meeting are reminded that a full version of the report should be provided, either written or emailed. If this isn’t available, then only a short summary will be given in the newsletter. Full reports will be included in the next newsletter following receipt.
At the March meeting we had three reports. We had a midweek sail on both Phoenix YC boats in February, with Gordon skippering Spellbinder and Phil Steele skippering their new boat Quartette, a Westerly Oceanquest. Bill Thomas and John Wilson gave the respective reports, which follow. Carol Watson then regaled us with a tale of sailing in the New Zealand summer.
