Future Trips
1.1Round the Island and Helford – l’Aber Wrac’h races. Details of the proposals by Jeff Birkin and Alan Howells were emailed to all members in January and the response has allowed us to arrange three charters, all fully booked. These are:
1) A practice weekend for the Round the Island race on June 13-15.
2) The race on June 21 (charter from Thursday evening the 19th – Sunday 22nd ).
3) A cruise from Hamble to Falmouth, June 22-26, the l’Aber Wrac’h race on June 27/28, and a cruise back to Hamble by July 3rd.
1.2One of the conditions for getting a charter for the Round the Island race for less than £2000 was that we booked two weekend charters on the same boat before June 19th. One of these will be the race practice weekend on June 13/15.
The second is now confirmed and fully booked, and will be a long weekend (with the opportunity for a cross-Channel trip) around the weekend of May 17/18 (i.e. Thursday evening – Monday). Jeff will skipper, and the cost for this 4-day cruise will be £136 per person. All initial £50 payments have been received, and the balance of £86 is due by next Monday’s meeting on April 14th. Please pay then, or either by cheque, payable to Bristol Sailing Association, sent to the Treasurer, Mrs J R Jenkyn, Edgecliff, 12 Marine Parade, Clevedon, BS21 7QS, or you may pay by bank transfer to the account of Bristol Sailing Association at Barclays Bank, account number 40853062, sort code 20-13-34. If you pay by bank transfer please email the Treasurer janejenkyn@blueyonder.co.uk to advise her.)
1.3Alan Howells proposed two future trips.
1) After last year’s successful sail training weekend he is offering to skipper another one in the autumn.
2) A week’s cross-Channel cruise from Plymouth in August, possibly around the late Bank Holiday week.
Jeff Birkin will also skipper another ‘handling under power’ training weekend in the autumn.
We have some interest for all these proposals. Will all those interested please let me (Jock) know.
News and notices
Mike Berry Thank you to those who donated to the St Michael’s Hospice in Hereford in memory of Mike Berry. £163 was sent in the name of BSA which is over £200 with the Gift Aid forms you signed. The hospice has thanked us for “the wonderful donation in memory of Mike Berry, a former member of the Bristol Sailing Association”.
Nine of us attended Mike’s funeral on Tuesday March 11th, including four of us who sailed with Mike on his first BSA trip in 1997. In his address Mike’s son Steve referred to the important part BSA had played in his father’s life, and photos of Mike sailing with us were included in the collection of scenes from his life at the reception after the funeral. Perhaps Mike’s time with us may be remembered by the last lines of John Masefield’s “Sea Fever”
“And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow rover
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over”.

Sailing reports. As you know Chris Wallace does a splendid job in adding all trip reports to the website, adding a map with routes. However he asks that all our reports could include the following basic information so that he can include the necessary complete details.
Full names (not just first names) of all crew
The dates of the trip
The name and type of boat.

3.Recent Trips
At the March meeting Sue Fowle reported on a Caribbean cruise, and Ian Collins gave a report on a trip from Plymouth cut short by an accumulation of detritus between Plymouth and Fowey, presumably swept in by the recent prolonged bad weather.
