Future Trips

Gordon Ogden will skipper a midweek trip on the PYC boat ‘Quartette’ on Tuesday November 13th – Thursday 15th. There is still one place available for those who joined PYC as Associate Members. This place is also open to all PYC members.

1.2Chris Watts is skippering the first BSA trip on the new PYC yacht RelaX on December 3rd – 5th. This is fully booked.

1.3Trips for Next Year

Ian Collins and Alan Howells are suggesting a couple of significant trips to get arranged for next year before diaries fill up. The other reason is to get yachts booked before circumstances change especially given uncertainty with chartering from Richard Brown who will also be chartering to the Sailing School.  Looking for expressions of interest at this stage.

Late April. One week: Plymouth / Channel Isles/ St Malo / Treguier and back (might not get to all!) If there is enough interest we might take two yachts.

Late May / early June Three weeks (crew changes possible during trip for anyone who can’t manage three weeks). Plymouth / various ports and islands South and West Brittany and back.

We don’t know next year’s prices, other than having been told they will be going up. With a comfortable five aboard probably best to assume £50 each per day charter cost if we can charter from Richard – hence the need to start thinking now,

Expressions of interest please to Alan (alanhowellsandco@gmail.com). Both Alan and Ian will be available to answer questions at BSA meetings.

News

2.1Membership renewal.

Membership renewal for 2018/19 is now due. A renewal form has been sent to all members. Please bring this to renew at the meeting on November 12th. Becky asks that members pay by bank transfer if possible, as recent bank closures mean she has to drive to Wells to pay in cheques. Pay by bank transfer to the account of Bristol Sailing Association at Barclays Bank, account number 40853062, sort code 20-13-34, using reference BSAsub and your surname, and please email the Treasurer beckygeesilkmill@gmail.com to advise her and give any change of contact details. . If you do pay by cheque, send it payable to Bristol Sailing Association to the Treasurer, Mrs R A Goddard, 29 The Old Silk Mill, Coombe Lane, Shepton Mallet, BA4 5XA, or bring it to the meeting.

To comply with the General Data Protection Regulations a Data Privacy Policy has been sent with the renewal form. Please read this and inform us of anything you are not happy with. Note that a positive opt-in is required for use of photographs; provision for this is included on the membership renewal form, so we do need the forms returned this year.

2.2Christmas Dinner. A booking has been made for Aqua on Welsh Back, Bristol, for Tuesday December 18th at 7.00 pm for 7.30. This has been arranged by Jill Hunter, who has now completed the arrangements, including menu choices, with the restaurant.

2.3Theory Courses

Here is an offer by Alan Howells.

Traditionally this is the time of year when sailors study their theory. There used to be courses run locally and at times they were even subsidised by HM Government. No longer - they are now expensive and probably inconvenient. Online is of course always an option but that is also expensive.

If anyone is put off by the expense or inconvenience it is possible to acquire the knowledge by home study. The course materials are not particularly expensive and you may be able to buy or borrow them from another member. However, it can help to have access to someone who will help if you are having difficulties at certain points. If anyone wants to pursue that option I am happy to try to help by being that person who will work through any difficulties with you. This is entirely informal as I am not an instructor but with a bit of mutual effort we can get there.

Recent trips

Trip reports –A reminder that Chris Wallace has asked for all members who provide trip reports to include the type and name of the boat, and the names of all crew, so that the reports can be completely listed and referenced on the website. Photographs sent to webmaster@bristolsailing.org.uk would also be very welcome.

At the September meeting we had reports from Ian Collins on trips he skippered from Plymouth on the August Bank Holiday long weekend, and the following week in Mallorca. Gordon reported on his boat handling training trip in Plymouth, and Peter Wakeling gave a report of sailing from Pula in Croatia. These reports follow.

We also have Julia and Chris Wallace’s final report from the Mediterranean this year ‘Aremiti in September’. This, together with Sue Fowle’s two reports she gave in August on charters in Belize and Montenegro, will be sent by separate email to limit the size of this email (enclosed for those sent by post).

And finally, an offer we can’t resist….

As secretary I get quite a lot of unsolicited communications, usually firms selling decking or pontoons, but never one like this before. Note the bribe of a whole £2 per member.

Hello, my name is Antoine and I’m the CEO of Lumen. I have come across your yachting club and would love to collaborate with you. We have a unique proposition that I think could be of mutual benefit to you.The majority of singles over-50s are active, tech-savvy individuals and yet there are no decent dating apps dedicated to this age group. That’s where we come in: Lumen, the first ever app-only dating platform dedicated to the over-50s. Launched this September, we’re rapidly growing across the UK and what’s even better? We’re totally free to download and use. With 100% of profiles verified, a heavy emphasis on bios and hobbies our main priority is to provide a safe, welcoming, and age appropriate dating community for the 7.5 million singles over 50 in the UK.So... here’s what we’re thinking - we’d send you a personalised link to send out to your members to advertise us, and we’d pay you £2 per new member that comes from your Yachting club.

If you’re interested in partnering with us, then please get in touch by replying to this email, and someone from my team will be in touch
